The science of metals is changing.

Modumetal, a global nanotechnology company headquartered outside Seattle, is revolutionizing the essential building blocks of major industries.

Creating new possibilities across entire sectors, from transportation and energy to infrastructure and beyond, Modumetal is focused on improving the performance of industrial materials by developing new applications and scalable processes.

“Our technology exceeds the performance limitations of materials today, at a cost that is competitive with conventional metals,” opens the President and CEO of Modumetal, Dennis Creech.

The company’s cutting-edge technology produces nanolaminated materials that demonstrate unique characteristics such as increased environmental resistance strength, durability and wear performance environmental resistance, fundamentally changing the performance effectiveness of metals used in many applications and solving corrosion problems across a variety of industries.

A nanometer is an inconceivably small unit of measurement, approximately 100,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, yet Modumetal has managed to achieve an impressive industrial-scale manufacturing process that delivers nanolaminated alloys.
Precision wave form technology, tailored with Modumetal’s proprietary chemistry, causes metal ions to bond together in layers of nanometric thickness, an environmentally sustainable process superior to conventional methods.

“Modumetal’s nanolamination technology provides a tenfold performance increase and cost parity with existing products, driving consumer demand and revolutionizing the metals field – customers love our products!” acclaims Creech.

Proven technology

With a fully automated production line in Houston, Texas, Modumetal nanolaminates fasteners for use in the energy industry along with licensees in Scotland and Malaysia.
The company is investing to quadruple capacity by mid-2022, having impressively sold out the full capacity of its Houston production facility last year.

Our technology exceeds the performance limitations of materials today, at a cost that is competitive with conventional metals” – Dennis Creech, President and CEO, Modumetal

“North American industry is bouncing back, and manufacturing is tremendously fun and exciting to be working in as it plays a key role in driving the US economy,” Creech tells us.
“The US has exported much of its manufacturing prowess overseas but is now bringing it back as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, and the need to create meaningful jobs in the country.”

Modumetal products have now been added to the specifications of most leading energy companies, and its technology has been substantiated via joint industry papers. Field trials have also been successfully completed in the world’s harshest environments, proof that the technology works.

“This provides us with a unique competitive advantage and barrier to entry for competitors,” notes Creech, who cites NanoGalv® as the best performing corrosion-resistant coating used in the oil and gas industry.

A nanolaminated zinc-nickel fastener coating designed for highly corrosive applications, NanoGalv® can be used as a drop-in replacement for cadmium, conventional galvanize, epoxy, and PTFE coatings.

“If you damage a homogenous coating during installation, for instance, you can create a corrosion path vertically down to the substrate (base metal), whereas if you damage the NanoGalv® coating, the exposed layer directs the corrosion horizontally,” Creech explains.

NanoPlex®, meanwhile, is a nickel-cobalt nanolaminate technology that commercially addresses corrosion and wear resistance in subsurface applications, designed to protect industrial tubulars and couplings.

Modumetal, whose final product, ModuGalv®, has been field trialed to address corrosion and extended life expectancy in infrastructure-related applications

Modumetal generates revenue through product sales and by licensing its technology to steel manufacturers and automotive electroplasterers to reduce logistics and capital costs.

“We sell a nanolamination design and licensing package that includes our NanoPro® controller, commissioning support, necessary training, and proprietary chemistry to begin producing Modumetal nanolamiated products quickly and easilywith all the information that our licensees need to produce Modumetal nanolaminates,” outlines Creech.

Sustainable coatings

Modumetal has focused on fasteners both to support the offshore energy industry, and as a means to prove the technology on a real-world application. Since then, it has entered into joint development agreements to apply the technology to additional product families.

For instance, the company has entered the automotive market with a focus on electric vehicle requirements. 2021 saw Modumetal nanolaminate a pickup truck chassis and other automotive parts, whilst this year it has been approached by key customers to nanolamiate select drivetrain parts, invertor covers, stamped metal components, and more.

“Modumetal will grow by licensing our innovative technology to steel producers, traditional electroplaters, and early adopters” – Dennis Creech, President and CEO, Modumetal

Oil and gas customers have also requested that the company move to other troubling areas in which they struggle to manage corrosion, such as offshore walkway grating and subsurface pump parts.

“Since Modumetal’s technology offers a much longer lifecycle, customers don’t experience unplanned downtime or have to purchase replacements parts, and cars and trucks stay on the road for longer before being replaced. We believe this has a true ripple effect on the environment and sustainability,” says Creech.

It is Modumetal’s values that guide its culture of innovation and sustainability, the latter of which is viewed as a responsibility of the company and an essential feature of its business strategy.

Sustainability is integral to everything Modumetal does, representing an investment in society, the environment, and the long-term future of the company.

“It is a priority for us to innovate – to offer technology that lowers carbon intensity and improves our operational efficiency to reduce emissions,” Creech informs us.

“Technological innovation and our people are key to creating sustainable processes and products that will improve the lives of future generations and ensure a cleaner planet for us all.

“At Modumetal, we collaborate both internally and externally to develop novel ideas based on the perspectives of others that harness this innovation. We look forward to helping customers to solve their corrosion challenges in an environmentally sustainable manner.”

License to innovate

Partnerships are critical to the success of Modumetal’s technology. Working with chemical providers, applicators to license the technology, and distributors to get products to the end customers, Modumetal views partners as an extension of the business and a competitive advantage for the company.

These relationships allow for a free flow of feedback and ideas which, over time, creates a more streamlined, effective supply chain that has a positive impact on costs, availability and customer service.

One such partner is Tri-Star Industries, a leading global manufacturer and supplier of fastening solutions designed for oil and gas, power and petrochemical applications. The group’s Fasteners of Singapore division was the first licensed manufacturer of Modumetal’s NanoGalv® fastener coating, and the first supplier of NanoGalv® coated fasteners in Asia and Australia as it continues to grow its regional presence.

The technology has also been licensed to Rollstud, an industry leader in the manufacture, distribution and coating of all types of fasteners. Based in Aberdeen, Rollstud is committed to providing quality products at a competitive price, while delivering exceptional customer service.

“Modumetal will grow by licensing our innovative technology to steel producers, traditional electroplaters, and early adopters,” Creech shares.

“In addition to our supply chain and applicator partners, we also work with customers to jointly develop our technology to solve some of their key challenges.

“When developing a new technology, we take the critical steps needed to ensure our process can be applied consistently across licensees so that end users can be confident in the product they are receiving.”

Modumetal’s staff, driven to produce the highest quality products and technologies, are duty bound to flag up any safety or quality concerns on the job.

As well as having company-wide priorities, Modumetal also formulates individual performance targets and goals for each employee, in order to meet or beat customer expectations and help to build the business together.

It’s clear that Modumetal has created a high-performance, results-driven culture amongst staff, who are committed to making a difference through world class products and services.

“For anyone looking to make a difference in the future of metals, please reach out as we have plenty of opportunities to join the team!”

In my February 2021 column, I introduced a nanotech product called NanoGalv® offered by Modumetal (www.modumetal.com). NanoGalv® is being clad onto fasteners to give them strong anti-corrosive properties.

This month, I want to cover a similar product offered by Modumetal—NanoPlex®. This product is very similar to NanoGalv®, employing the same nano-laminated alloy structure, as shown in Fig. 2 in my February 2021 column. However, unlike the zinc-nickel alloy used in NanoGalv®, NanoPlex® is a cobalt-nickel nano-laminate alloy. NanoPlex® enjoys superior corrosion resistance, as well as enhanced wear resistance in the harshest subsurface environments.

Before presenting field trials of several NanoPlex® applications, I should mention that Modumetal’s line of nickel-based nano-laminated claddings has undergone extensive testing, including:

Plunger lift pistons: As presented in SPE Paper 179923-MS, “Nano-laminated Alloys for Improved Return on Oilfield Assets,” NanoPlex® was applied to plunger lift pistons used in artificial lift applications in the Texas and Oklahoma area. The operator’s experience with conventional plungers was a life of only two months, due to corrosion and erosion. “The plunger pistons in these wells typically run 20–30 trips per day, at an average travel speed of 700 ft/min. Failure of the plunger lift systems is typically a result of adhesive wear and loss of dimensionality of the plunger piston….”

In this field trial, 4 to 6 mils of NanoPlex® were nano-laminated on a carbon-steel plunger piston and installed in three wells. NanoPlex® cladding was chosen for its ability to resist wear but to be of low-enough hardness to prevent tubing wear. In one of the test wells, the uncladded piston had to be replaced in 62 days, due to loss of OD. The NanoPlex® piston was removed from service after 135 days, with OD loss only on the leading and trailing edges of the piston. In summary, the NanoPlex® plunger piston enjoyed twice the life of the unclad plunger piston.

Production tubing wear: In another field trial presented in the SPE paper, an operator was experiencing a high rate of downhole tubing failures, due to a combination of corrosion and sucker rod-induced wear. Trials were run on four wells. Pup joints (27/8-in., 6.5-ppf, J-55) were internally clad with 0.8 mm of NanoPlex® and run into the wells at depths associated with high tubing failure rates. One of the test wells, which had an historical mean time to failure of 175 days, experienced a run life of over a year with NanoPlex® pup joints.

Let me start this month’s column with a confession: I am a huge fan of nanotechnology! The official definition of nanotechnology is “science, engineering and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometers” (see www.nano.gov). A nanometer is one-billionth (10-9) of a meter, or 10Å—so, very small. A human hair has a diameter of 1,000,000 nanometers. I believe that nanotechnology can be a game-changer for the oil and gas industry. You might wonder how technology, so small, could benefit an industry whose equipment is usually so large.

In future columns, I will present several novel technologies that I’ve run across in my “technology wanderings.” I believe that these technologies have the potential for a disruptive economic impact on the production side of the oil and gas industry.

Meanwhile, let’s start with one of the most common issues we face—corrosion.

Nanolaminated coatings. One of the new nanotechnologies available to industry is nanolaminate metallic alloys, which can be applied to a variety of base materials. These metallic alloys, designed to improve asset life expectancy in highly corrosive surface and subsurface environments, are a product line called NanoGalv® and NanoPlex® nanolaminated coatings. These are offered by Modumetal, Inc. (www.modumetal.com) Theirs is a very elegant technology of electro-depositing (or “nanolaminating”) various alloys onto a substrate, using waveform modulation of the electric current.

Nanolaminated coatings refer to a class of materials that are comprised of nanometer-scale layers that vary in composition, phase, material microstructure, or a combination of thereof. Nanolaminated metallic coatings provide a thin, corrosion-resistant layer that protects the substrate material from the environment. Through an electrochemically controlled deposition process, precisely defined configurations of layered metal alloys are assembled onto a substrate material, such as carbon steel.

Fig. 1. SEM of nanolaminated layers.

The deposition process can be controlled to produce nano-scaled layers with unique interfacial properties, resulting in enhanced corrosion resistance, elastic modulus, strength, hardness, adhesion, and fracture toughness……as a result of the atomic structure of the interfaces between the nano-layers. Figure 1 is a scanning-electron-microscope view of a cross-section of nanolaminations on a substrate.

So, how does this nanolamination phenomenon prevent corrosion? Figure 2 below demonstrates how nanolamination creates a more difficult path to the base material. The left side of the figure demonstrates the theoretical corrosion progression through a conventional homogeneous coating. Whether general or pitting in nature, the corrosion process progresses through the thickness of a homogenous coating system, leading to failure and reduced life expectancy.

Fig. 2. Corrosion process on coatings.

The right side of the figure demonstrates how nanolaminations slow corrosion progression. Corrosion attacks the outermost layer first and then progresses to the layer below it. At that point, the corrosion is confronted by an interface that represents an additional barrier. Corrosion tends to be confined to the less noble layer. Each layer is protected cathodically, and corrosion proceeds laterally rather than through the nanolayered alloy. The key is to optimize corrosion resistance by controlling the galvanic interactions between layers.

After years of research, third-party testing, and fields trials in harsh environments, Modumetal concluded that a zinc-nickel nanolaminated system provided optimal corrosion protection for surface applications. The corrosion-resistant properties of this technology were compared to several conventional coating systems and documented in NACE paper 9920, “Zinc-nickel nanolaminate—Advanced coating for bolt corrosion control,” and presented at the 2017 Corrosion Conference & Expo.

In 2020, Modumetal started applying its NanoGalv® coating system to fasteners (such as studs, nuts and bolts) for the oil and gas industry. The NanoGalv® coating used on studs, nuts and bolts is approximately 8 microns thick. To confirm that the coating would not interfere with the tightening of fasteners, Modumetal tested the effect of NanoGalv® on the nut torquing process and found that the K-factors were unaffected.

Field experience has shown that NanoGalv® coatings are not damaged by standard installation tools or practices, such as impact wrenches.

So, when thinking about one of the biggest problems facing our facilities and equipment, think small.

Compromising the function and safety of essential infrastructure—including fasteners—corrosion is an expensive and persistent adversary. Corrosion-related failures cost an estimated $2.2T worldwide and lead to increased maintenance, decreased production, and exposure to potentially dangerous conditions. Coated with Modumetal’s patented nanolaminated alloy, NanoGalv®️ Fasteners challenge corrosion head on, providing more than 10x improvement in corrosion resistance over conventional coatings and materials.
